The Kitchen Table Artist Collective @ The Shed

The Kitchen Table Artist Collective | The Shed | May 23rd – June 14th 2012

The Kitchen Table Collective are the third Galway based visual art organization to take up a residency at The Shed as part of a  project by ADAPT Galway. The public are invited to view the work in progress on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 10th June 12-6pm.

The Kitchen Table collective was founded in July 2011 by nine recent fine art graduates from GMIT. The group’s formation was precipitated by discussions that took place at an Open Space experimental workshop presented by Tulca in May 2011 (Open Space for New Horizons), and was a direct response to an offer of a physical space by one participant at 3 McDonagh Ave., Mervue – the Rosa Parks Studio and Gallery.

The collective is committed to the Open Space model of interaction and dialogue between arts practitioners.

The Shed Awaits You

When you hear the words docks, harbour and shed what is the one image that springs to mind?
Art? Maybe not right now but the upcoming launch of The Shed by Adapt Galway might change that.

The Shed, located on the middle pier of Galway Harbour, will provide a unique space for artists to create experimental large-scale sculptural works during a 4 week residency. The residency forms part of an exciting 12 month programme of events at The Shed which will involve a number of local artist collectives including 126, Engage, Artspace Studios and Lorg Printmakers. The programme of events is being co-ordinated by Adapt Galway.

The official launch of the programme of events takes place on Thursday 5th April at 7pm where many of the artists will be available to discuss the concept and the programme of events. The Forge studios, being the first group to occupy the shed, will show their work in progress.  All members of the public are invited to attend.

At approximately 4,000 square foot the warehouse, residing on the middle pier of the docks, will be transformed into a unique exhibit space in which a diverse mix of artists shall either showcase their work or use as a working space.

It is a unique and exciting project which will not only allow artists work in a large space, it will also allow the general public view works from artists they may have previously unheard of. The project has been generously supported by The Galway Harbour Company, The Harbour Hotel and the Galway City Arts Office.

Adapt Galway is a coalition of visual arts groups and artists. They have a long term strategy to develop artist led spaces in Galway city.  The Shed project highlights not only the need for visual artist space, but also the opportunity for unused vacant commercial units to be utilised in such positive manner.

So far the interest in the concept has been good with a number of property owners already in discussions to donate their vacant space to the group.  Adapt Galway are always interesting in meeting with stakeholders and owners of unused space for short to medium term artist-led events.

More information on the programme is available on www.adaptgalway.com
