'Play is nothing if nothing if not an open and unreserved challenge to everything opposed to play'
Georges Bataille

Unrequited Hatred will be a diverse and multi-faceted constellation of work, that is representative of a shared attitude or stance towards our artistic practice. This attitude manifests itself in the form of a collective desire to create work that is provocative, energetic, assertive and that is indifferent towards the increasing commercialisation of the contemporary art world.

Thematically, the exhibition will confront the obsession with utilising or killing time efficiently within the present consumerist society. This obsession filters itself through the mediums of technological devices such as television, computers, the internet and mobile phones. Champions of communicative technology posit that this free flow of information has helped liberate the role of the individual within Western society. However a convincing argument could be made that precisely the opposite has occurred; namely that the constant bombardment of information and visual stimuli has had the effect of debilitating the individuals capacity to think and reflect, contributing to the pervading sense of ennui and lethargy that characterises the postmodernist epoch.

The exhibition Unrequited Hatred will respond to, and attempt to transcend the present condition. In this project the artists will attempt to carve up the exhibition space as an independent site from this culture of passivity. By intermixing a variety of different materials and sources, the objective will be to create work that is allusive and rich in connotations, that resists constrictive judgement and easy classification. The processes of play and humour will be used to provoke; but also to induce more expansive methods of thinking and creating.  In the final instance, while the project will ultimately remain firmly rooted within the fabric of the contemporary landscape, we will nonetheless strive to present to the viewer something of the disavowed and fantastical desires that lurk beyond the façade of everyday life

Brian Loughran
Brian Loughran is a Galway based visual artist, graduating from LCAD in 1995. Loughran explores notions of memory and identity in his work, often using the mediums of object installation and performance art. Brian has received grants from the Arts Council of Ireland, and has performed and exhibited in Unit 1, Dublin, Platform Arts, Belfast, 2009, ‘Weather permitting’, Galway, Driocht, Dublin, and RAP, Limerick.
For 'The Shed' exhibition, Loughran presents two new works, 'Prey' and 'Guillotine'. Both works play on the viewer's sense of anticipation and expectation. 'Guillotine' alludes to the seduction of dangerous close encounters and the notion of being close to the edge of a perilous situation. 'Prey' evokes a sense of frustration and endless empathy as the work is futile in its nature.

Kate Howard

Kate Howard aims to examine the various spatial and architectural features of the exhibition space. By the means of nominal site-specific intervention, seizing an existing situation and exposing the essence of the materials employed. Howard is primarily concerned with instability and alterability, with construction and decay. She hopes to create new environments that reveal the essence and unpredictability of the materials themselves. Through employing and manipulating functional everyday materials and re-configuring their potential. Interventions produced on site, objects become spatial structures.
Kate Howard is a contemporary visual artist and arts organizer based in Galway. In 2010 she completed her MA in Arts Policy and Practice through the Huston School of Film and Digital Media at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She holds degrees in Fine Art from Sligo IT (2000) and GMIT (2009).

The Kitchen Table Artist Collective | The Shed | May 23rd – June 14th 2012

The Kitchen Table Collective are the third Galway based visual art organization to take up a residency at The Shed as part of a  project by ADAPT Galway. The public are invited to view the work in progress on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 10th June 12-6pm.

The Kitchen Table collective was founded in July 2011 by nine recent fine art graduates from GMIT. The collective is committed to the Open Space model of interaction and dialogue between arts practitioners.

The Shed Awaits You

When you hear the words docks, harbour and shed what is the one image that springs to mind?
Art? Maybe not right now but the upcoming launch of The Shed by Adapt Galway might change that.

The Shed, located on the middle pier of Galway Harbour, will provide a unique space for artists to create experimental large-scale sculptural works during a 4 week residency. The residency forms part of an exciting 12 month programme of events at The Shed which will involve a number of local artist collectives including 126, Engage, Artspace Studios and Lorg Printmakers. The programme of events is being co-ordinated by Adapt Galway.

The official launch of the programme of events takes place on Thursday 5th April at 7pm where many of the artists will be available to discuss the concept and the programme of events. The Forge studios, being the first group to occupy the shed, will show their work in progress.  All members of the public are invited to attend.

At approximately 4,000 square foot the warehouse, residing on the middle pier of the docks, will be transformed into a unique exhibit space in which a diverse mix of artists shall either showcase their work or use as a working space.

It is a unique and exciting project which will not only allow artists work in a large space, it will also allow the general public view works from artists they may have previously unheard of. The project has been generously supported by The Galway Harbour Company, The Harbour Hotel and the Galway City Arts Office.

Adapt Galway is a coalition of visual arts groups and artists. They have a long term strategy to develop artist led spaces in Galway city.  The Shed project highlights not only the need for visual artist space, but also the opportunity for unused vacant commercial units to be utilised in such positive manner.

So far the interest in the concept has been good with a number of property owners already in discussions to donate their vacant space to the group.  Adapt Galway are always interesting in meeting with stakeholders and owners of unused space for short to medium term artist-led events.

More information on the programme is available on www.adaptgalway.com
